Submitting a talk

He Kiwi PyCon koutou - You are Kiwi PyCon

We are looking for submissions on any topics of interest to the Python community in Aotearoa. Our conference is attended by people with a wide range of interests and experiences, including experienced professional programmers, people who use Python to support their work in other fields, students, and hobbyists

Anyone can submit a proposal to be a speaker or poster presenter at Kiwi PyCon XIII.

We have three presentation types:

  • Standard talk: these are 30 minutes long, including time for questions at the end. As a speaker you can choose how to use your time, but typically speakers talk for about 25 minutes and leave 5 minutes for questions at the end.

  • Extended talk: If you need a little more time, these are 45 minutes long, again including time for questions. Note that you may submit a proposal for an extended talk and include a note indicating that you can deliver a similar talk in a standard 30 minute time slot as an alternative.

  • Poster: If you have something to share but don't want to deliver a talk, consider a poster submission; prepare an A1-sized poster that will be displayed at the conference.

    • Conference organisers will have posters printed and brought to the conference venue, or presenters may opt to prepare and bring their posters themselves.

    • During the scheduled poster session at lunchtime on Saturday, poster presenters will be available answer questions and discuss the topics of their posters.

Our conference is governed by a code of conduct and a health and safety policy which we ask you to read before making a submission. By submitting a proposal you are agreeing to abide by them. Also, all talks are recorded and uploaded to the Kiwi PyCon YouTube channel.

Kiwi PyCon presenters can purchase their conference tickets at a reduced price - you will be sent a corresponding voucher to enable the discount in the shop.
The speaker ticket price is the same as the Earlybird regular price. If you already purchased a ticket after the Earlybird period ended - but before your talk was accepted - we will refund the difference. Please note, we will reserve enough tickets to cover all speakers, so to avoid this refund dance you may want to just wait with your ticket purchase until the talk submissions have been reviewed (first week of June).
Speakers, along with everyone who participates in Kiwi PyCon contributes to our community efforts by buying a ticket. Some financial assistance may be available for speakers to assist with costs, although budget constraints mean that we are unlikely to be able to assist with overseas travel expenses.

Proposals for talks must be submitted by 23 May, 2024 End of Day, Anywhere on Earth (AoE)
Poster submissions will be accepted until 30 June 2024 End of Day, Anywhere on Earth (AoE)

Submitting a proposal to present and Kiwi PyCon is as easy as we can make it. You can save an unfinished proposal at any point and complete it later (Just don’t miss the deadline!) and you can edit a proposal after submitting if necessary. If you want some feedback to help polish your proposal, complete and submit a draft, then email to ask us to review it and respond with suggestions for improvement. Please don’t wait until the final deadline if you decide to do this!

You’ll need to supply the following information to complete your proposal:

  1. Title: Provide a clear and direct title submission.

  2. Abstract: A concise description to tell delegates why they may be interested in your presentation.

  3. Session type: Tell us if you’re submitting a talk, an extended talk, or a poster. If you want to submit an extended talk but could shorten to a standard talk if necessary, select the extended talk and include a note (see below).

  4. Description: Some additional information that will follow the abstract on the web site. (optional)

  5. Notes: While the fields above will be used in the public programme, information in the notes field is only visible to conference organisers. (optional)

  6. Session image: An image to include on the schedule item for your presentation. (optional)

  7. Additional speaker(s): Provide an email address for any co-presenters. They will be able to see and modify your proposal. (optional)

  8. Anticipated audience: Let everyone know the Python experience level that best matches  your planned presentation.

In addition, each presenter will need to provide:

  1. Their name.

  2. A short biography.

  3. Any schedule constraints to be considered when scheduling your presentation. (optional)

  4. A profile image. (optional)

  5. Anticipated need for financial aid in order to present at Kiwi PyCon. (optional)

Presenters must also agree to our code of conduct, health and safety policy, and must consent to photography and recording of their presentation.

Note that we use Pretalx to manage proposals. If you already have a profile on Pretalx, then you can update and reuse your existing profile.
